The Cathedral of San Bartolomeo is the most important religious monument on the Rock. The cathedral , with three and cross vaults, was built in an area were the Roman agora once stood, on the ruins of a pre-existing Norman church and monastery commissioned by Roger II and destroyed during the sacking and pillaging inflicted by the pirate Barbarossa in 1554. The present cathedral were erected after this in the 16th century after the Gothic style, as per Spanish tradition of that time, and completed in the 17th century after the Baroque style. The present facade, next to the Baroque bell tower, is from 1861. On the altar in the apse, on the left, we can see a silver statue of the patron saint of the Aeolian Island, San Bartolo.
