A project of widespread and inclusive culture
Starting in May 2025, the Luigi Bernabò Brea Archaeological Museum in Lipari – part of the Aeolian Islands Archaeological Park of the Sicilian Region, directed by architect Rosario Vilardo – will “speak” in Braille and LIS (Italian Sign Language), making it accessible to the blind and deaf thanks to a series of technological innovations funded by the PNRR.
Coming soon: 35 tactile reproductions of exhibits, including masks from ancient tragedy and New Comedy (of which the museum holds a large collection), statuettes, vases, and a 5th-century BC Attic krater; apps and two electric golf cars to transport visitors with reduced mobility to the museum.
The innovations will be presented on May 2nd and 3rd during a conference, culminating on Saturday, May 3rd (9:00 PM) with the premiere of Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus. In the performance, the actors will wear theatrical masks reproduced from digital scans of archaeological finds – miniatures from the funerary sets of Lipari. Actor Christian Poggioni will star in the role of Prometheus.
This PNRR-funded project was developed by the Aeolian Islands Park in collaboration with the Catholic University of Milan, the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, and the company Naos Lab. Scientific coordination is by archaeologist Maria Clara Martinelli (Eolie Park), along with Francesca Fatta, Professor of Architectural Drawing (UniRC), and Elisabetta Matelli, Professor of Greek Theatre History (UniCatt).
