The volcano is still active
Between 1888 and 1890, the La Fossa crater was the site of the island’s last eruption. The sulphur mine was quickly abandoned, and workers fled as clouds of ash and volcanic bombs rained down on what is now—quite incredibly—a residential area.
The volcano remains active, as evidenced by the intense fumarolic activity, with emissions of toxic gases and temperatures exceeding 600°C. Visiting the summit area, which is completely safe, offers breathtaking views of the entire Aeolian archipelago and the vast Lentia caldera.
The slopes of La Fossa are also witnessing a gradual recolonization by plant life.
