A unique perspective on the largest of the Aeolian Islands and its gastronomic traditions
Not even an impressionist painter could have captured in a single frame the vibrant palette of the kaolin quarries, active until the 1970s. Amidst gypsum crystals and vivid hues—remnants of intense fumarolic activity—you’ll overlook the cliffs of Timpone Pataso, formed by sediments from a lake that existed 100,000 years ago, hiding fossil imprints of laurels and dwarf palms.
Living specimens of these plants can be seen along the trail descending toward the sea and continuing south (*), skirting ancient wave-cut terraces (former beaches from the last interglacial period) and small coves like the beautiful Cala Fico.
We’ll then reach the San Calogero thermal baths—an 19th-century building adjacent to a small tholos considered one of the oldest known spa structures. Here, we’ll enjoy a generous lunch at Ristorante Le Macine, which will serve a selection of dishes prepared with local ingredients.
