Strombolicchio is a sea stack of volcanic origin located about 1,5 Km away from the northeast coast of Stromboli . The island is characterized by steep cliffs overlooking the sea. Its slopes are of great natural interest, as house several examples threatened with extinction of flora and fauna. The submerged walls, which go down for about 50 meters to a sandy seafloor, house encrusting algae, sponges, marine annelids, bryozoans and gorgonias. Since 1991 Strombolicchio has been declared a natural reserve, with severe restrictions on access. It is also the place where a lighthouse of the Italian Navy, powered by solar energy , is located. |
