The Fossa di Vulcano was the scene of the last eruption occurred between 1888 and 1890. The ancient quarries of sulfur opened within the crater, given in concession to the Scotsman James Stevenson, were quickly abandoned and in their place, along the fractures closely monitored by volcanologists, is now present an intense fumarolic activity, with temperatures exceeding 600° C and considerable sulfur deposits. |
