Stromboli is formed by a single volcanic cone which rises over 920 m, and falls below the sea level about 2000 meters. The rocky coast is high and steep. The island's highest point is the Cresta Vancori which together with the Pizzo Sopra la Fossa composes the summit edge of the ancient volcano, and is the popular destination for visitors thanks the extraordinary view into the interior of the craters. For several decades, it was possible to distinguish three main active craters, one in the north-east of the volcano crater, one in the middle, and the third in the southwestern part. Each of these craters contains several erupting vents, the quantity of which vary depending on the levels of erupting activity. |
